Economist M Masrur Reaz has expressed his unwillingness to join as chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) just three days after being appointed by the interim government.

Masrur, chairman and founder of Policy Exchange Bangladesh, wrote to the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance, in this regard on Saturday.

On 13 August, the interim government appointed Reaz as the new chairman of the BSEC, following the resignation of Prof Shibli Rubayat-Ul Islam shortly after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on 5 August.

After the appointment, a section of officials of the BSEC raised their voices against Reza as he has been maintaining a good relationship with Salman F Rahman, private business affairs secretary of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Reza delayed joining the new workplace following the criticism though the BSEC officials withdrew their objection.
