BNP chairperson and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has decided to nominate party Secretary General and LDRG Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the party’s presidential candidate.

A senior BNP leader confirmed the development on Sunday (August 9).

The leader stated that the party chairman has virtually finalized Mirza Fakhrul’s nomination for the country’s highest office.

Mirza Fakhrul, a veteran politician and key leader of the BNP, has been serving as the party’s secretary general for over a decade. His nomination reflects the party’s trust in his long-standing leadership and role in national politics.

Several other senior BNP leaders noted that the decision to finalize the candidate rested solely with Tarique Rahman, and they were awaiting formal communication.

However, a leader close to the prime minister confirmed that Fakhrul has been chosen for the presidency.

Meanwhile, BNP has officially initiated preparations for the presidential election. On Sunday morning, a party delegation collected two nomination forms from the Election Commission.

BNP Vice Chairman and Chief Whip of the National Parliament Nurul Islam Moni, along with Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, collected the nomination papers from the Returning Officer’s office at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon.

Earlier, BNP’s National Standing Committee entrusted party Chairman Tarique Rahman with the sole authority to select the party’s presidential candidate. Given BNP’s absolute majority in the National Parliament, its nominee is almost certain to be elected president.

The Election Commission has scheduled the presidential election for August 20. Voting will take place in the National Parliament from 2:00PM to 5:00PM on that day, if necessary.

However, if Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir remains the sole valid candidate, no parliamentary vote will be required, and he will be declared elected president uncontested.
