More females than males in Ctg, yet ‘unmarried’ men higher than women

In Chattogram, the number of females is more than males. Even in the case of marriage rate, women are also ahead of men. In contrast to 63.54 percent of married women, the rate of married men is 56.57 percent. Besides, against 26.52 percent of unmarried women, the rate of unmarried men is 42.43 percent.

This was informed at the district report publication ceremony of Census and House Census 2022 at Chattogram Circuit House on Thursday (June 27) afternoon.

It is informed that till 14 June 2022, the population in Chattogram was 91,69,465 people. Among them, 42,84,249 people in rural areas and 48,85,216 people live in urban areas. 10 years ago in 2011, the population in Chattogram was 76.16 lakh people. As per that the population in the district increased by 15.53 lakh in 10 years.

1,736 people live per square kilometer in Chattogram. In 2011, this number was 1,442. The annual average growth rate of the population in the district is 1.65 percent, which was 1.40 percent in 2011.

87.53 percent of the total population in Chattogram are Muslims. Besides, 10.72 percent of the rest of the population are Hindus, 1.63 percent are Buddhists, 0.09 percent are Christians and 0.03 percent are other religions.

Besides, the number of unmarried men is more than women in the district. Against 26.52 percent of unmarried women, the rate of unmarried men is 42.43 percent.

The number of females is more than the number of males in the district. The ratio of men to every 100 women is 99.37 percent. The number of men in the district is 45,70,113 and the number of women is 45,98,926. As per that, the number of women is 28,813 more than men.

In the district, married women are 63.54 percent, married men are 56.57 percent, widows are 8.99 percent, widowers are 0.79 percent, divorced women are 0.42 percent, divorced men are 0.09 percent, marriage-separated women are 0.52 percent while the number of men is 0.13 percent.

The literacy rate in Chattogram is 81.06 percent, of them, 79.26 percent are women and 82.88 percent are men. About 30.38 percent of the population aged 15-24 years in the district are not engaged in education, work, or any training activities. Among them, the number of women is 46.62 percent and the number of men is 12.16 percent.

In Chittagong, the number of agricultural occupations has decreased. 17.46 percent of the population works in agriculture in the district. Besides, 28.74 percent are involved in the industrial sector and 53.80 percent are involved in the service sector.

The number of mobile phone users above 15 years is 77.07 percent. Among them, 68.50 percent are women and 85.98 percent are men. On the other hand, 50.82 percent use the Internet. Among them, women are 42.43 percent and men are 59.54 percent.

Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abul Basar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman said that the data presented by the Statistics Bureau (BBS) will be useful for various developments in the district. There are opportunities to work on various issues, especially sanitation and energy. In Chattogram, 1.49 percent of people are still using raw/open toilets. “I request the Department of Public Health Engineering to work out how to bring it down to zero,” he added.
