TDS Desk:

The price of onion in the capital Dhaka’s markets has increased by 31 percent in a month, which is 77 percent more than a year ago. At present, one kg of desi onion is being sold for Tk 110 to Tk 120.

Such a report has been obtained by visiting various markets in the capital Dhaka analyzing the data of the Non-Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) on Sunday (July 15).

Besides onions, the price of rice has increased over the week. The price of eggs was also higher yesterday than last week. However, the prices of potato, ginger, cumin and cloves have “decreased slightly”. The price of green chilies is almost skyrocketing.

Wholesale and retail onion sellers say that when onions come to the market, the price becomes high since then. The recent heavy rains across the country have contributed to the hike in onion prices. The rains have disrupted the supply system. Besides, Indian onion was not in the market till now. For this, the price is a “little higher”.

Visiting Karwan Bazar, it has been seen that desi onions are being sold at Tk 100 to Tk 108 per kg in wholesale shops, depending on the quality and shops. In the retail market, desi onions are being sold at Tk 110 to Tk 120 per kg depending on the standard. Besides, the Indian onion is being sold at Tk 95 to Tk 100 per kg wholesale.

Imported (including Indian) onions are being sold at higher prices. As per the TCB, imported onions are being sold at Tk 110 to Tk 120. A month ago, this onion was Tk 85 to Tk 90 per kg. A year ago, imported onions were sold at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg. In other words, compared to last year, the price of imported onions is 156 percent higher.

Wholesalers say that although there has been no Indian onion in the market for a long time, it has started coming for a few days. Due to this, the price of Indian onion has decreased slightly in the wholesale market.
