Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday called for maintaining national unity among the ruling and opposition parties to prevent a return of fascism and foreign interference in the country.

The premier made the call in his closing speech at a budgetary session of the National Parliament, which was chaired by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal.

In a parliamentary democracy, it is natural for ruling and opposition parties to have differences in opinions. However, these differences should never culminate into enmity, antagonism and vengeance among the parties, he said.

Instead of vengeance, the inter-party relations would be driven by fairness and justice.

To ensure that fascism-authoritarianism can never again raise its head in Bangladesh and also that the country never again becomes a “vassal state,” the ruling and opposition parties would preserve their national unity, the prime minister said.
