Police in a raid on Tuesday arrested a man for allegedly attempting to rape an 8-year-old child in Sirajganj town.

The arrestee, 33-year-old Sabbir Hossain, is the son of Khorshed Alam and also an auto-van driver.

The incident took place at Mahmudpur area of the town on Tuesday, according to Sub-Inspector (SI) Mamun Imtiaz from the Sadar Police Station.

He said, a woman from the neighbourhood visited the suspect’s house with her daughter to have a dress stitched by Sabbir’s wife, who works as a tailor.

“Sabbir took the child into the bathroom of the house, where he attempted to rape her after giving her a packet of chips. The child screamed, alerting others in the house. Locals later detained Sabbir,” said SI Mamun.

Police subsequently received a call via the national emergency hotline 999 and went to the scene.

Sabbir was later taken into police custody and a case has been filed over the incident, according to SI Mamun.
