Prices of all winter vegetables have risen sharply within a week, even as supplies have increased, according to visits to several kitchen markets in the capital.

At Karwan Bazar, Nakhalpara, Hatirpool and Mirpur-11 on Friday, traders were selling vegetables at higher rates across the board.

Retailers said farmers were struggling to harvest crops because of severe cold, claiming prices would ease once temperatures rise.

Tomatoes were selling at Tk100-120 per kg, up from around Tk80 a week ago. Medium-sized cauliflower, which cost Tk15-25 per piece last week, was priced at Tk35-40. Radish prices rose by Tk10 to Tk40 kg, while eggplant was selling at around Tk60. Beans were priced atTk 50-70 per kg after a Tk20 increase. Potatoes edged up slightly to Tk25-30 per kg, while turnip, papaya and broccoli were selling at Tk30-50. Okra and pointed gourd were priced between Tk90 and Tk120 per kg. Despite the rise in vegetable prices, onions, eggs and poultry remained comparatively stable. Farm brown eggs were being sold at Tk105-110 per dozen, unchanged from last week.

Local (Sonali) chicken was priced at Tk240-250 per kg, broiler chicken at Tk155–165, and beef at Tk750–800 per kg.

Fish prices showed mixed trends. Pangas was selling at Tk170-200 per kg, pabda at Tk400-530, koi at Tk250-350, rui at Tk 320–420, tilapia at Tk 200–280, katla at Tk 340–440 and shing at Tk 340–640.
