Women tied to tree and tortured by land grabbers: Criticism grows

An incident of tying women to tree and torturing by land grabbers in Pashchim Mothurapur village under Solonga thana in Sirajganj district has grown agitation as well as criticism across the civil society members and netizens as some photos of this incident went viral through social media facebook and different newspapers recently.

On the other hand, question has risen over the suspicious role of police as they are yet to arrest any of the accused after a week of filing the case in this connection.

Police said, the accused have already secured bail after filing the case. As a result, they can’t arrest any of them.

The incident of tying women to tree and torturing was occurred on Friday (December 5) last, when a group of influential people led by Liton, 30, son of Abu Sayed of Mothurapur village under the mentioned police station tried to establish a tin-shed dwelling house on a disputed land. As Julekha Begum, 38, wife of Tamizul Islam of the village and their female family members went to stop erecting the house on the disputal land, Liton and his associates including Abdur Razzaque, Menhaz Ali, Hafiza Khatun, Babu Mia, Minu Mia, Rejaul Karim and Esharat Ali attacked the women and tortured them after tying with a tree by rope.

Hearing their screaming, locals rushed to the spot and rescued them. Later, they were given treatment at a hospital.

Centering the incident, Julekha filed a case with the respective court in Sirajganj on December 12.

The court taking the allegation into cognizance asked Solonga thana to investigate into the incident.

Admitting the incident, Imam Jafor, Officer in Charge of Solonga police station told The Daily Sky, “We have registered the allegation as a case and Sub-Inspector (IS) Mostafizur Rahman has been appointed as investigation officer (IO). Necessary action would be taken after completion of investigation.

He however, also suggested for talking with SI Mostafizur Rahman to know details about the incident.

When contacted, SI Mostafizur Rahman said, “I have visited the spot and came to know that, the incident occurred centering a land dispute that going on between two groups of people in the village. But, he also admitted about the torturing the women after tying to tree.”

Nabokumar Karmakar, a social worker and local politician said, torturing after tying with tree is termed as barbaric and inhuman incident. But, we don’t deserve such incident in this modern era. The law enforcers should be cautious more so that such incident is not taken place at anywhere of the society in future. Ensuring exemplary punishment may help in reducing such barbaric and inhuman incident from the society in the future.
