16 killed in separate road accidents in 2 dists

At least 15 people including five of a family were killed and 30 others injured in two separate road accidents in Faridpur and Mymensingh district yesterday.

Of them, 14 people including five members of a family were killed and five others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a pickup van on Dhaka-Khulna highway in front of Tetultola Eblum Highway Restaurant at Kanaipur union in the Sadar upazila of Faridpur around 8:00 am yesterday.

Five of the deceased of a family have been identified as Rafiq Molla, 35, his wife Sumi Begum, 23, their two children Ruhan Molla, 6, Habib Molla, 3 and Rafiq’s 63-year-old mother Morzina Begum of Bejidanga village at Boalmari upazila in Faridpur district. Identities of other deceased could not be known so far. The injured were admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital in Faridpur.

Police said, a bus was going to Magura from Dhaka. When the bus reached Kanaipur area, it collided head-on with a pickup van, leaving 11 people dead on the spot. On information, the members of police and fire service rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies. Later, the injured were taken to the hospital where two of them died while undergoing treatment.

On the other hand, two people were killed and 25 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Mymensingh’s Tarakanda upazila yesterday.

The accident occurred around 8:30 am at Ramchandrapur of Kodaldhar Bazar on the Mymensingh-Tarakanda road leaving two persons dead on the spot.

Govt to compensate Faridpur road accident victims:

Faridpur District Commissioner Kamrul Ahsan Talukdar said that, Tk 20,000 will be given as immediate support for the burial of the deceased. Apart from this, the administration will give Tk 5 lakh as compensation to each of the dead and Tk 3 lakh to the seriously injured.
