2 students crushed under train while playing games on rail track

Two college students were killed after being crushed under the wheels of a train at Melandah upazila in Jamalpur district on Monday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Mojibor Rahman, 18, and Shakil Mia, 20, both residents of Rukanai area under the upazila. They both passed HSC examination from Islampur Government College.

The incident took place at around 12.20 pm in Rukanai area under Durmot union of the upazila.

Citing locals, Melandah Police Station sub-inspector Enamul Islam said a Dewanganj-bound commuter train from Dhaka ran over Mojibor and Shakil while they were playing an online game ‘Free Fire’ on their phones, sitting on the railway track and covering them with warm clothes, leaving Shakil dead on the spot and Mojibor critically injured.

The injured then, succumbed to his injuries when he was being taken to a nearby hospital, he said.

According to the deceased’s friend, the train blew horn several times but the duo didn’t hear the sound as they had their headphones on.

The legal action was underway in this regard, added the SI.
