Two students of Dhaka University have filed a leave to appeal against the High Court’s verdict, declaring that the circular cancelling of the recruitment quota for government jobs is illegal.
A leave to appeal was filed in the relevant branch of the Appellate Division on Thursday.
Shah Manjurul Haque, the lawyer of the two students, said that the verdict of the High Court has been cancelled or amended in leave to appeal. The next step in the hearing will be announced on Saturday.
On Tuesday, the state filed a leave-to-appeal in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court’s verdict reimposing the quota system in government jobs. The Attorney General’s office submitted the application.
According to the petition, it is a policy decision of the government to keep a quota in government jobs and the court cannot interfere with this policy decision.
Earlier, the full copy of the judgment delivered by the High Court on July 14 was published on the Supreme Court’s website. A High Court bench of Justice KM Kamrul Quader and Justice Khizir Hayat handed down the verdict.
The judgment said that the circular issued in 2018 cancelling the quota in government jobs was not issued legally. Hence this circular has no legal effect. It ordered the restoration of quota for children or grandchildren of valiant freedom fighters following judgments and orders.
