Seven of the injured were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital

Four people were killed and eight others injured in a head-on collision between a covered van and a microbus in Karnaphuli, Chittagong, while they were returning home after attending a wedding ceremony.

Two of the deceased died at the scene, while the other two succumbed to their injuries after being taken to hospital, police said.

The accident occurred around 2am on Sunday in the College Bazar area of Karnaphuli on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway.

According to witnesses, the covered van had crossed the Shah Amanat Bridge and was making a high-speed U-turn in the College Bazar area when it collided with the microbus coming from the opposite direction.

The deceased were identified as Niaz Morshed, 22, his younger sister Mimtah, 17, their maternal uncle Md Ferdous Alam, 55, and microbus driver Md Munna. All of them were residents of Eidgah area in Cox’s Bazar.

Seven of the injured were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Police and eyewitnesses said Mimtah’s elder sister’s wedding was held at a community centre in Agrabad, Chittagong city, on Saturday night. After the ceremony, several family members and relatives were returning to Eidgah in Cox’s Bazar in the microbus when the accident occurred.

Nur Ahmad, officer-in-charge of Karnaphuli police station, told that four people died in the accident—two at the scene and two after being taken to hospital.

“The covered van has been seized following the accident, but its driver and assistant fled the scene. Legal action is being taken,” he said.

SI Nurul Alam Ashik of the Chittagong Medical College Hospital police outpost said the accident occurred around 2am in the College Bazar area under Karnaphuli police station.

He said the injured were taken to the hospital.
