Truck owners and transport worker leaders have issued a seven-day ultimatum to reinstate an effective traffic management system on the roads and highways of Sirajganj, warning of a total highway blockade if their demands are not met.

The threat was declared at a joint press conference held at the District Truck and Covered Van Transport Workers’ Union office on Wednesday (September 2) afternoon. Transport owners and workers’ organizations convened the briefing to press for immediate action against illegal vehicles and to demand structured traffic policing across the district’s road network.

Speaking at the event, leaders voiced strong frustration over the prolonged absence of traffic police on major thoroughfares in Sirajganj. They stated that the administrative oversight has led to rampant movement of unauthorized vehicles, severe gridlock, and a surge in daily road accidents, putting both transport workers and the general public at serious risk.

The leaders noted that they had previously staged a human chain on August 27 at the Koddar Mor intersection on the Jamuna Bridge West Highway to draw attention to the issue. However, despite their public demonstration, authority figures have failed to deploy traffic personnel or initiate visible enforcement measures.

The press conference was addressed by Munshi Zahed Alam, President of the Sirajganj District Truck and Tank Lorry Owners’ Group, alongside Moniruzzaman Monir and M. A. Wahed, President and General Secretary of the Sirajganj District Truck and Covered Van Transport Union, respectively.

They warned that if authorities fail to enforce traffic order within the next seven days, transport workers will shut down all major highways across the district.
