The High Court has ordered exhuming the body of BNP leader Hariss Chowdhury and performing DNA test.

The High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Muhammad Mahbub-ul Islam passed the order on Thursday (5 September).

The court gave this order after holding a hearing on the writ petition of Hariss Chowdhury’s daughter Barrister Samira Tanjim Chowdhury who sought the DNA test. Barrister Mahdin Chowdhury stood for the writ.

Following the order, Hariss Chowdhury’s daughter Barrister Samira Tanjim Chowdhury said, “Sheikh Hasina’s dictatorial government brutally tortured my father. He was harassed with false cases. There is a deliberate ambiguousness around his death, which is very painful. He is a brave freedom fighter and a patriot. He was not given due respect. We want a DNA test of the body to clear the confusion.”

His daughter Samira Tanjim confirmed that he died in a hospital in Dhaka on 3 September 2021. He was 68 years old at the time of his death. He was buried in a graveyard near Dhaka.

For quite some time Hariss Chowdhury’s cousin Ashiq Chowdhury hinted about discrepancies about Hariris’ death through social media status on Facebook but did not say anything directly. Since then, the matter has been in discussion.

However, Hariss Chowdhury’s daughter Samira Tanjim Chowdhury clarified the matter. She said that her father died in Dhaka.

Earlier, there were various rumours about the whereabouts of Hariss Chowdhury. Many said that Hariss Chowdhury died in London, but he was at home in Bangladesh. He performed the duty of an Iman in mosques and invited people to the path of Islam on behalf of Tabligh-Jamaat.
