The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 885 kilograms of hilsa while it was being smuggled into India through the border area in Dowarabazar upazila of Sunamganj in the early hours of Saturday.
A patrol team under the Sylhet BGB Battalion conducted a special drive at Banshtola along the Banglabazar border around 3am, said Sylhet Battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Md Hafizur Rahman.
They seized the consignment of hilsa, the approximate market value of which is over Tk22 lakh, he added.
Lt Col Hafizur said as per the directives of the higher authorities, the BGB is continuing its operational and intelligence activities to maintain security and prevent smuggling along the border areas.
Meanwhile, the government has approved the export of 3,000 tonnes of hilsa to India on the occasion of the upcoming Durga Puja.
