The High Commission of India marked the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at a commemorative event held on the premises on Wednesday.

High Commissioner Pranay Verma, speaking on the occasion, emphasised the significance of the event as a humble expression of gratitude towards Gandhi and the many individuals who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence from colonial rule.

Highlighting Gandhi’s enduring legacy, Verma said that Gandhi’s leadership not only shaped India’s freedom movement but also inspired anti-colonial struggles in Asia and Africa.

He stressed the continuing relevance of Gandhi’s commitment to peace, non-violence, tolerance, and understanding in today’s world, as they were during the independence struggle.

Verma also reflected on the global recognition of Gandhi’s ideals, pointing to the International Day of Non-Violence, observed annually on Gandhi’s birth anniversary, as a testament to the universality of his teachings.

The day serves as a reminder of the importance of non-violence in addressing modern challenges such as terrorism.

The High Commissioner further underlined the relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy of ecological coexistence and respect for nature, especially in confronting contemporary issues like climate change and the need for sustainable development.
