A court in Dhaka has placed Abul Kalam Azad, former principal secretary of the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, on a seven-day remand in a case filed over the killing of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal leader Shamim Mollah in Paltan on 28 October last year.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman passed the order on Sunday.

In the same case, Dhaka metropolitan Awami League Treasurer Humayun Kabir was also remanded for the same period.

Paltan police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Tanmay Kumar Biswas, also the investigating officer (IO) of the case, produced the duo before the court and sought 10 days for each to quiz them.

The defence lawyers, however, submitted petitions seeking bail along with the cancellation of remand prayers.

After the hearing, the court allowed the IO seven days to interrogate each of the accused, said SI Alamgir Hossain, the court’s general recording officer.

On 28 October 2023, Shamim was killed in violence which erupted centring the BNP rally. In September this year, a case was filed with Paltan police station in this regard.

A team of the Detective Branch of police arrested Abul Kalam Azad in the city’s Kalabagan area on Saturday.

He was elected an MP from the Jamalpur-5 constituency in the last parliamentary election.
