Garment workers from Mahmud Jeans Limited in the Haritakitla area of Chandra in Kaliakair upazila, Gazipur, staged a protest on Thursday and blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway demanding their due wages.
Blockade paralyzed the traffic, leaving commuters stranded for hours. The blockade began at 9am today (28 November) causing traffic congestion stretching several kilometres on both sides.
According to the Industrial Police, law enforcement officials are negotiating with the factory owners and agitated workers to restore normal traffic flow on the highway.
The workers said that the arrears of last month’s salary were supposed to be paid by the 7th of this month, but the authorities have not paid it yet. Despite repeated requests from the workers, the authorities have rejected them.
Many expressed facing severe financial difficulties due to the unpaid wages.
Police and army personnel were deployed to the scene to manage the situation. Efforts were underway to disperse the protesters and restore traffic flow.
