A Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student was killed and two of his classmates injured after a private car hit their motorcycle on the 300-feet road in Narayanganj’s Rupganj on early Friday.
The deceased was Mohtassim Masud, 22. He lived in Dhaka’s Kalabagan, said Faiyaz, a classmate of Masud.
The injured—Amit Saha, 22, and Mehedi Hasan, 21—are residents of BUET’s Ahsanullah Hall.
All three were second-year students of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at BUET.
The incident occurred around 3:30am at a police check post next to Nila Market at Purbachal, when three students were standing on the side of the road with their motorcycle during police checking.
All three victims were rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared Masud dead, said Mehedi Islam, senior assistant superintendent of police (circle C) of Narayanganj Police.
Amit was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while Mehedi was admitted to a private hospital.
The three friends went for a ride to the 300-feet area on a single motorcycle, said Faiyaz.
Masud’s body is currently at Kurmitola Hospital.
The private car involved in the incident has been seized. Three people were arrested in connection with the death, and a case under Road Transport Act, 2018 has been filed with the police station, said a police official.
The arrestees are — Mubin Al Mamun, 20, son of Brigadier General (retd) Abdullah Al Mamun of Mirpur DOHS; Merajul Karim, 22, son of Rizwanul Karim of Pirerbag; and Asif Chowdhury, 19, son of Bahauddin Chowdhury Baker of Uttara sector 13.
Police said that the car was being driven by Mubin Al Mamun, and the other two were in the back seat.
According to the police and case documents, Masud left home around 8:00pm last night with his motor-cycle.
He along with his two friends went to visit the 300-feet area, and completed dinner there. Around 3:30am, when three students were standing on the side of the 300-feet road as police stopped them for a routine check, a speeding car crashed into them. Masud died on the spot.
“The private car was seized, and the arrestees were sent to hospital for dope test as an allegation came that they were drunk or intoxicated,” said senior ASP Mehedi.
