Vegetable prices decrease; rice, chicken, fish remain high

The prices of vegetables and potatoes have declined, while eggs, fish and meat continue to sell at high prices in the capital’s kitchen markets.

Over the past week, vegetable prices have dropped by Tk5-10 per kg as markets are flooded with winter produce such as cauliflower, radishes and turnips. Similarly, potato prices have fallen by Tk10 per kilogram within the same period.

In contrast, the prices of eggs have remained stable, while rice, chicken and fish continue to be sold at previously high rates.

Traders said prices have dropped significantly following the increased supply of winter vegetables. The prices of cauliflower, cabbage and tomatoes have decreased by Tk10 per kg. Other vegetables were sold at the same low prices as before.

Round and long eggplants were sold at Tk50 per kg, radishes at Tk20, papaya and turnips at Tk30 per kg. Cauliflower and cabbage were sold between Tk15-30 per piece, bottle gourds between Tk40-50 per piece and green bananas at Tk30 per four pieces.

Green chillies were sold at Tk60-80 per kg, beans at Tk40-50 per kg and cucumbers at Tk50 per kg.

Bitter gourds pointed gourds, ridge gourds and sponge gourds were sold at Tk80-100 per kg, while snake gourds were sold at Tk60 per kg, carrots at Tk60 per kg and tomatoes at Tk50-60 per kg. Red spinach, spinach and water spinach were sold at Tk15 per bunch.

The price of potatoes has decreased compared to last week. Potatoes sold at Tk55-60 per kg last week were sold at Tk35-40 on Friday.

Ariful Islam, a trader at Mirpur 6 kitchen market, said an abundant supply of winter vegetables has led the prices to decrease. With a large quantity of local potatoes available in the market, the prices have dropped.

Local onions were sold at Tk50-55 per kg, while new Indian onions were sold at Tk55-60 per kg. Additionally, local garlic is being sold at Tk250 per kg, Indian garlic at Tk220 per kg and Chinese ginger at Tk180-200 per kg.

The prices of chicken and beef remain unchanged. Sonali chicken was sold at Tk340 per kg, while broiler chicken was Tk200-210 per kg. The beef was sold at Tk750-780 per kg, while mutton cost Tk1100-1150 per kg.
