Anti-discrimination student protesters blocked the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in protest against an incident where an accused was forcibly taken from Srinagar Police Station in Munshiganj.

The students staged the protest near the Dhaleshwari Toll Plaza in Keraniganj, close to Sirajdikhan Upazila in Munshiganj around 12pm on Saturday.

They blocked the road for about half an hour, causing traffic to come to a standstill and leading to a 10km-long traffic jam on both sides of the toll plaza.

Traffic resumed after the protesters withdrew from the road upon assurances from the authorities.

The incident stems from the events of Friday evening when police arrested Tariqul Islam, a member of the Jubo Dal of the BNP, named in an FIR, from Srinagar Upazila in Munshiganj.

Later, around 10pm, BNP members and affiliates stormed the Srinagar Police Station and took the arrestee away by force.

In response, activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement blocked the highway.

Sirajdikhan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khondoker Hafizur Rahman told journalists: “Following the incident of the accused being taken from Srinagar Police Station, activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement briefly blocked the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway. However, traffic on the expressway is now normal.”
