Bangladesh and Japan have signed an “exchange of notes” on Japanese grant aid for a project for the improvement of equipment for air pollution monitoring with an amount of up to 835 million Japanese yen (about $5 million).

In this project, equipment for air pollution monitoring is to be set up to enhance the capacity to measure and analyse air pollutants derived mainly from vehicle emissions in the capital city Dhaka and Chittagong, thereby contributing to enhancing air pollution control capacity.

Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Ikuina Akiko witnessed the signing ceremony where Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi and Economic Relations Division Secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky signed the document on Monday.

“Under the ‘Strategic Partnership,’ Japan will continue its cooperation for the development and prosperity of Bangladesh for the peace, stability and prosperity of the region and the international society, and to further develop bilateral relations,” said Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ikuina.

Ministry of Environment Additional Secretary Md Khayrul Hasan was also present at the ceremony.

Based on this exchange of notes between the two counties, Ichiguchi Tomohide, chief representative of the Jica Bangladesh Office, and Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky signed a relevant grant agreement.
