It was an amazing moment for the Sirajganj town dwellers and traders on Monday as the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Nazrul Islam self with the market monitoring taskforce team came down on the streets to visit the market situation during the ongoing holy Ramadan.
The move of the Deputy Commissioner was praised by the civil society members as well as the business leaders.
Consumers and business insiders said that, if such monitoring is continued, the prices of essential goods including Ifter items will not increase further. To keep the market prices stable and bearable for the poor and low income group of people, there is no alternative of such initiative by the authorities concerned, they opined.
It is learnt that, a team of district administration led by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Nazrul Islam launched the market monitoring activities in the town on Monday to keep the market price in affordable level.
During the period, the Deputy Commissioner along with other relevant officials visited several parts of the town including kitchen market in Boro Baza’ar. At that time, the DC talked with the traders and consumers, and tried to know their views on price and supply issues.
He also asked the concerned officials to take strict stance against illegal grabbing of footpaths. To keep the roads smooth for movement and avert accidents and gridlock ahead of Ramadan, he asked the all concerned to observe their duties from their best levels.
He warned the traders to face dire consequences, if they violate consumer rights act. The Deputy Commissioner also emphasized on maintaining price lists in the stores and selling food items in a clean and hygienic atmosphere for the sake of public health.
Replying to the queries of journalists, the Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Nazrul Islam said, “The district administration has taken a strict stance against violating of the consumers’ rights. We have beefed up our surveillance so that no trader can increase the prices of essential commodities unnecessarily with the aim to make money overnight targeting the Ramadan. Besides it, we are determined to take drastic action against those, who will create artificial crisis of goods to make the market instable. A strong vigilance taskforce led by executive magistrate will remain active in the market for the whole Ramadan month in a bid to keep the prices in tolerable level.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ganapati Roy, Sirajganj Police Super Md. Faruk Hossain, UNO of Sadar Upazila Md. Monowar Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar thana Md. Humayon Kabir, Executive Officer of Sirajganj Municipality Md. Rafiqul Islam and President of the Borobazar Business Committee Tarazul Islam among others were also present on the occasion.
Tarazul Islam, President of the Borobazar Business Committee said, “We were surprised to see the DC himself taking to the streets to inspect the market. It is rare incident for the town dwellers and traders. We highly appreciate this step taken by the DC Nazrul Islam and hope that he will continue to engage in such activities in the future for the public interest.”
