Veteran Bangladeshi actor and producer Sohel Rana, born Masud Parvez, has officially announced his retirement from both acting and politics, concluding a remarkable career that spanned over 50 years.

The artiste entered the film industry as the producer of the 1972 liberation war film “Ora Egaro Jon”, directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam. He made his acting debut in 1974, portraying the titular role in “Masud Rana”, a film adaptation of Qazi Anwar Hussain’s popular spy thriller series.

Throughout his career, the actor appeared in over 300 films and received multiple accolades, including the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actor for “Ajante” (1996) and Best Supporting Actor for “Sahoshi Manush Chai” (2003). He was honoured with the National Film Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2019.

In addition to his contributions to cinema, Rana was active in politics, serving as a presidium member of the Jatiya Party.

Citing age and health concerns, the 79-year-old actor stated that he can no longer meet the physical demands of acting and political engagement. He expressed a desire to step away gracefully, cherishing the love and respect he has received from audiences over the years.

He told local media, “At 79, it’s difficult to stay active in both acting and politics. It requires energy and constant engagement, which my health no longer allows. Continuing now would feel like a burden.”

While announcing his retirement, Sohel Rana expressed disappointment with the state of the local film industry. He said, “Cinema has changed. Our generation no longer fits with today’s trends. Unlike in foreign films, where older actors are given meaningful roles, here we’re limited to stereotypical parts like parents or uncles—often without room to truly perform. I’d rather step away with the love and respect I’ve earned.”

The actor’s final film appearance was in Tanvir Hossain’s “Moddhobitto”.
