Actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay is set to form the government in Tamil Nadu after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), crossed the majority mark with crucial support from smaller allies, according to an NDTV report.
The development comes after days of political uncertainty following the state election results, which initially left the party short of the required numbers to stake claim to power.
TVK stunned political observers by winning 108 seats in its electoral debut, ending decades of dominance by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
However, Governor RV Arlekar reportedly refused to invite Vijay to form the government without proof of majority support in the 234-member assembly.
According to NDTV, TVK later secured support from the Congress as well as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India, taking the alliance tally to the required 118 seats.
Sources said Vijay is expected to meet the governor in Chennai on Friday evening to formally stake claim to form the next government.
The post-election deadlock also triggered speculation over a possible alliance between longtime rivals DMK and AIADMK, though the idea reportedly failed to gain support within either camp. Source: NDTV
