Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said on Saturday that the government will ensure the highest punishment for the killer of seven-year-old Ramisa Akter within one month, said.

He made the remarks on Saturday afternoon while speaking at the opening ceremony of a three-day programme marking the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, held at Nazrul Mancha in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh, and the Nazrul Award 2025 ceremony.

The Prime Minister said the government would not tolerate any form of child or women abuse, adding that swift legal action would be taken to ensure the maximum punishment for Ramisa’s killer within a month.

He said such punishment would be the death penalty, aimed at deterring similar crimes in the future.

He also emphasised the need to further expand the life and works of Kazi Nazrul Islam in world literature, calling for his philosophy to be passed on to future generations.

He suggested exploring the possibility of declaring Trishal as a “Nazrul City” and urged the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Tourism Department to assess its feasibility.

The Prime Minister said Bangladesh and Kazi Nazrul Islam are inseparable, describing the poet as a true representative of national identity, consciousness and nationalism.

He noted that 25 May marks the 127th birth anniversary of the beloved national poet and paid tribute to his enduring legacy.

He further said that national-level celebration of Nazrul Jayanti had not been held in Trishal since 2006, adding that the government felt proud to resume the state-level observance after nearly two decades.
