The number of major crimes in the country—including murder, kidnapping, rape, arms offenses, and violence against women—has decreased significantly, said Home Minister Salauddin Ahmad. Noting that the overall law and order situation is steadily improving, he added that while crime figures have dropped, achieving full public satisfaction will take a little more time.

He made the remarks on Thursday (September 3) while responding to reporters at the Secretariat following a meeting with representatives of the Saad faction regarding the upcoming Biswa Ijtema.

According to all indicators, the country’s law and order situation has improved, the minister said. "Compared to 2025, major crimes have fallen significantly. While the government is satisfied with the overall picture, work continues to meet 100 percent of public expectations.

Emphasizing transparency in regional crime data, Salauddin Ahmad noted that any discrepancies or confusion in reports gathered from districts would be verified and corrected using Police Headquarters records. Efforts to fully reactivate the police force are also underway, he added.

Firm stance on mugging

Responding to questions regarding a recent rise in mugging incidents, the Home Minister assured that law enforcement agencies are taking swift and stern action.

Citing the recent death of a schoolteacher targeted by muggers, he highlighted the police’s rapid response; within 12 hours of the incident, the primary suspect was arrested and the motorcycle used in the crime was recovered. The Detective Branch (DB) subsequently conducted raids to arrest additional suspects and retrieve stolen goods. Such prompt actions are effectively curbing mugging incidents nationwide.

Internal surveillance within police force

The minister also revealed that special surveillance is underway to identify personnel within the police force who are uncooperative or discreetly obstructing efforts to restore order.

Internal intelligence mechanisms remain active across all units to identify non-cooperative officers, he explained, adding that verifiable information submitted by the public would also be acted upon.
