A court in Sirajganj has placed Tamal Sarkar, the prime accused in a case over the attack and vandalism to the motorcade of VP Ainul Haque, also Parliament Member for Sirajganj-3 constituency on a two-day police remand.

Judge Omar Farooq of the Raiganj Cognizance Court passed the order on Wednesday morning after hearing arguments from both sides. Police had originally petitioned for a five-day remand to interrogate the accused.

Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Rafiqul Islam (Rafiq Akand) said the case statement alleged that the attack was carried out with the intention of killing the lawmaker. He added that, interrogating the accused under police custody could yield information regarding the motive behind the attack and who else was involved.

On the evening of August 15, MP Ainul Haque’s motorcade came under attack in Dhangora Bazar in Raiganj Upazila while returning from a programme. Although, the MP remained physically unhurt, the rear part of his vehicle was damaged.

Following the incident, Shamimul Hasan, former vice-president of Chandaikona Union BNP, filed a case with Raiganj Police Station. The lawsuit named 15 individuals, including prime accused Tamal Sarkar, along with 30 to 40 unidentified persons.

Police arrested Tamal Sarkar during a raid in the Dhangora Bazar area on the night of August 24. Earlier on August 17, two other accused in the case—Raiganj Press Club General Secretary and Municipal Swechchhasebak Dal Member Secretary Md. Golam Muktadir and Alamgir Hossain—were arrested and interrogated under a one-day police remand. Both the accused were released after securing bail from the court on Tuesday.
