Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has stated that Bangladesh wants a new treaty with India regarding the sharing of Ganges waters, rather than a mere renewal. He also mentioned that the new agreement must safeguard the nation’s interests and include a guarantee clause.

He made these remarks at an event on rivers held in the capital on Thursday (September 24).

Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee said that rivers are one of the key driving forces of the country’s economy. However, industrialization and climate change are adversely impacting them. He stressed that the root causes of river pollution must be identified.

During the event, the minister also highlighted that the Buriganga River remains a major challenge.

It was revealed at the event that Dhaka city generates 3,900 million liters of wastewater daily, out of which 1,500 million liters discharge directly into rivers. As a result, the nation suffers financial losses amounting to billions of dollars annually.
