The High Court (HC) has postponed the Jhenaidah-1 constituency by-elections, which was scheduled to be held on June 5, for 21 days.
A single bench of the HC comprising Justice Md Jakir Hossain passed the order on Monday. Earlier on April 23, the Election Commission Secretary Md Jahangir Alam announced the schedule for Jhenaidah-1 by-polls. As per the schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is May 7 while the date for scrutinising those is May 9 and the last date of withdrawal of candidature is May 16. Jhenaidah-1 seat fell vacant since the death of freedom fighter Abdul Hyee, Member of Parliament from the constituency, on March 16.
