Educational institutes across the country will remain closed on Wednesday (August 12) for the occasion of holy Akhiri Chahar Somba.

According to the annual holiday lists published by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, a one-day holiday has been issued for this occasion.

This holiday covers public and private schools, colleges, madrasas, technical institutes and universities.

However, Akhiri Chahar Somba falls under the category of optional holidays, meaning it is not a general public holiday in the whole country.

Various educational institutes including Jahangirnagar University, Jagannath University and National University along with other public universities issued holiday notices for Wednesday.

The term ‘Akhiri Chahar Somba’ combines Arabic and Persian words. ‘Akhiri’ means last, ‘Chahar’ means four, and ‘Somba’ means Wednesday. Therefore, Akhiri Chahar Somba refers to the last Wednesday of the month of Safar.

The day holds special dignity and importance in Muslim society. On this occasion, people organize Doa, Milad Mahfil, religious lectures, Zikr, and special prayers at various places.

According to traditional religious accounts, the news of the Prophet’s (PBUH) temporary recovery during his final illness brought immense joy to his companions. It is reported that the day was the last Wednesday of Safar. To commemorate his recovery, the tradition of observing this day developed in Muslim society.

Many Muslims observe this day to express gratitude to Allah. Observances include taking a bath, performing two Rakat Nafil prayers, reciting supplications, and giving charity.

Various mosques, madrasas, and religious institutions across the country organize discussions, Milad, and prayers for the day.

However, scholars hold differing opinions regarding the formalities and religious basis of observing Akhiri Chahar Somba. Therefore, scholars advise individuals to seek guidance from reliable Islamic experts regarding personal religious practices for the day.
