The students and job seekers, who have been waging a movement seeking reform in the quota system in government jobs, have enforced a day-long “complete shutdown” across the country on Thursday.

They asked to close everything except the hospitals and other emergency services.

The demonstrating students and job seekers are observing the programme protesting the condemnable attack on the peaceful movement of students that killed at least six people.

17-YEAR-OLD DHAKA RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE STUDENT SHOT DEAD

Farhan Faiyaaz, 17, an 11th grader at Dhaka Residential Model School and College was shot dead during a clash with the police and Jubo League men on Thursday afternoon in the Dhanmondi 27 area.

Sohag Ferdous, a teacher of the Dhaka Residential Model School and College confirmed the Daily Sun.

“He was hit by bullets in his chest and head,” Sohag Ferdous said.

GOVT SUSPENDS HSC EXAMS FOR 21, 23 AND 25 JULY

The government has suspended the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations, scheduled for 21, 23, and 25 July under all education boards due to the worsening law and order situation in the country.

Bangladesh Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee announced in a statement this afternoon.

QUOTA PROTESTERS REJECT DIALOGUE PROPOSAL

Quota protesters rejected the government’s proposal to sit in dialogue.

Hasnat Abdullah, one of the key coordinators of the quota reform movement, said this in a Facebook post on Thursday afternoon

3 Killed In Clashes Between Police And Protesters

At least two protesters were killed and many others injured in a clash with police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka’s Uttara.

A person was killed in another clash between protesters and law enforcers in the Badda-Rampura area.

The deceased was identified as Dulal Matbar, a driver by profession.

BTV HEADQUARTERS TORCHED

A group of quota protesters have vandalised and torched the headquarters of Bangladesh Television (BTV) in Dhaka’s Rampura.

The incident took place at around 3:00pm today amid widespread violence in Dhaka and other parts of the country during the ‘complete shutdown’ demonstration programme.

HELICOPTER RESCUE TRAPPED POLICE MEN FROM CANADIAN UNIVERSITY

Two helicopters were seen arriving at the Canadian University of Bangladesh in Merul Badda to rescue police officers trapped inside. One of the helicopters was seen airlifting several police officers.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 PM on Thursday. Since the morning, there have been multiple clashes between police and students protesting for quota reform in front of BRAC University in Merul Badda.

At one point, the police took refuge inside the Canadian University of Bangladesh while the protesters remained outside.

From inside the university, the police fired rubber bullets, injuring many.

GOVT READY TO SIT WITH THE PROTESTERS: LAW MINISTER

Law Minister Anisul Huq said the government is ready to sit with the quota reform protesters anytime.

“We are ready to sit with them whenever they want, even today if necessary,” he told reporters at the secretariat on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

HIACE DRIVER KILLED DURING CLASHES IN BADDA

A private car driver was killed during clashes between police and private university students in Badda and Rampura area this noon.

The deceased was identified as Dulal Matbor, a Hiace driver who was crossing the area at the time.

Doctors declared him dead after he was rushed to Farazy Hospital around 12:30pm, Rubel Hossain, deputy general manager of the hospital told the reporters.

DAFFODIL UNIV STUDENT SHOT IN NATORE

Fahad Ibne Zahid, a Daffodil University student, was shot during a clash with police at Swadhinata Chattar in Natore town.

He is currently being treated at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. His condition is critical, according to his father Zahid Prong.

Some protesting students blocked the Natore-Bogura highway at the Madrasa Mor in Swdhinota Chattarr when police attempted to disperse them, triggering the clash.

Several students and seven police officers, including Superintendent Tariqul Islam, were injured by brick chips. Student leaders Anik Mahmud and Utsav accused the police of conducting severe repression on them.

ONE KILLED IN CLASH IN UTTARA

One person has been killed in Dhaka’s Uttara area amid ongoing clashes with Northern University students and the police.

The personwas brought to Bangladesh Medical College, Uttara Branch’s emergency section where he died.

The identity of the deceased was not known immediately.

Shahida Begum, Nurse Supervisor of the hospital’s emergency section confirmed this to the journalists.

BCL MEN ATTACK CANADIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

A group of activists of Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) have allegedly attacked the agitating students at the Canadian University campus in the Merul Badda area in the capital.

Police- quota protesters clash at Science Lab

Police and students agitating for quota reform in the government job have locked in a clash in the Science Lab area in the capital at around 1 pm on Thursday.

Police baton-charged the protesters and threw sound grenades at them to disperse from the roads.

The students took shelter in different lanes in Kalabagan and Dhanmondi areas.

SHUTDOWN CRIPPLES CAPITAL CITY AMID CLASHES BETWEEN POLICE AND PROTESTERS

Firing teargas and rubber bullets riot police clashed with quota-reform protesters in different parts of the capital city in the first hours of Thursday at the start of a nationwide complete shutdown.

Riot police fought pitched battles with the protesters in Badda, Merul, Uttara, Dhamandi, Motijheel and Arambagh. Police used teargas shells and rubber bullets. Cocktails –homemade bombs– rocked different parts of the city. The clashes also spread in the alleys of the residential areas causing panic among residents, eyewitnesses said.

Teenage boy killed during violence in Jatrabari

An 18-year-old boy has reportedly been killed during a clash between quota-reform protesters and riot police in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area, hospital sources said on Thursday.

Official confirmation of the death was not immediately available.

The victim has been identified as a Siam, from Charfashion of Bhola who resided in Matuail, Jatrabari, and worked at a battery shop in Gulistan.

POLICE CLASH WITH STUDENTS IN MERUL BADDA

Police clashed with protesting students in front of BRAC University at Merul Badda in the capital. The clash took place at around 11:15 pm.

When the students started gathering in front of BRAC University, the police tried to disperse the protesters by throwing tear gas. At present, the traffic is stopped in Merul Badda area.

NO VEHICLES PLYING IN CITY’S SHANIR AKHRA, KAZLA, RAYERBAG

People were seen walking towards their destination in the capital’s Shanir Akhra and Kazla areas in the morning. Vehicles were not being allowed to move in the Rayerbag-Kadamtali area of the city.

The Dhaka-bound buses from the southern part of the country had to stop at the Signboard area of Siddhirganj in Narayanganj due to the barricades set up there. The passengers were seen heading towards their destinations with luggage by foot.

CU STUDENTS REFUSE TO LEAVE HALLS, TIME EXTENDED TILL 10 AM THURSDAY

Most of the residential students of Chittagong University refused to leave the halls on Wednesday even after the directive from the administration to vacate halls. Later, the CU administration extended  time till 10 am on Thursday.

According to the decision of the CU syndicate meeting, the university was declared closed indefinitely and the female students were instructed to leave the halls by 6:00 pm on Wednesday (July 17) and the male students by 9:30 pm. The provosts were also instructed to seal all the rooms after the students left the halls.
