The temperature in Dinajpur plummeted to a low of 11.2°C on Friday, disrupting life in the northern district.

The region is experiencing high humidity at 94%, with winds blowing at a speed of 2 kilometres per hour, according to the Dinajpur met office.

For over a week, temperatures have hovered between 10 to 13°C, leading to a sharp decline in daily activities.

The cold spell is set to continue throughout December, confirmed Mr Tofazzal Hossain, the official in charge of the local weather office.

With freezing temperatures and thick fog blanketing the region, residents are facing significant hardship, especially those from lower-income backgrounds who lack proper winter clothing.

The extreme cold has caused severe disruptions in daily life, with many unable to venture outside due to the biting cold.

The situation is most dire for those residing near rivers, who suffer the most due to a lack of adequate warm clothing.

Hospitals are witnessing a rise in patients, particularly children and the elderly, suffering from respiratory ailments triggered by the cold. Many children and elderly patients are being admitted with conditions such as bronchitis, persistent coughing and breathing difficulties.

Dr Waresh, a pediatric specialist, advised that children and elderly individuals should avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary.

“Exposure to such extreme cold can severely affect their health, leading to complications,” he cautioned.

The situation is exacerbated by the harsh northern winds, which cut through the body, making it feel even colder.

The dense fog, combined with the bitter winds, has left Dinajpur shrouded in an icy blanket, further complicating daily commuting and activities.

Authorities are urging residents to take extra precautions during this ongoing cold wave to prevent further health risks, especially for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
