BNP Standing Committee Member Hafizuddin Ahmed on Thursday reacted to the demolition of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence at Dhanmondi 32, saying that these actions might be aimed at “destroying democracy”.

He said that such actions might lead to chaos and hinder democratic progress in the future.

Speaking at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club, Hafizuddin said that his party would investigate whether a neighbouring country had any involvement in the incident.

“…We will also try to know whether there is any interference from a neighbouring country in this matter,” he said.

Hafizuddin further said, “The incident that took place yesterday is still ongoing. It has not yet ended. We do not have information on who was behind it. We also do not know the government’s role in it. Therefore, we will wait a little longer,” he said.

“Hopefully, by the end of today, everything will become clear—who was behind this and who is responsible. Once we have the full information, BNP will share its stance with the media. It would not be right to comment without complete information,” he added.

He further stressed the necessity of holding a national election within the year and urged the interim government to take action against what he described as conspiracies against democracy.

“I urge the interim government to take immediate steps against all forms of chaos and conspiracies against democracy. Holding a national election as soon as possible is necessary to address these issues,” he said.

He also criticised several advisers of the interim government, saying, “Several advisers in this government were previously part of Sheikh Hasina’s team. Over the past 15 years, they have not even posted a status on Facebook.”
