Flood situation will improve in 24hrs; Disaster Ministry hopes

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Saturday expressed hope that the flood situation in the country will improve in the next 24 hours. There is no possibility of heavy rainfalls in North East and adjacent uplands, said the ministry.

KM Ali Reza, an additional secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, informed this at a press conference on Saturday (August 24) afternoon.

“Till now, the number of flood-affected districts is 11. The total number of affected people in 11 districts is 49,38,159 people and 9,44,548 affected families,” he said, adding: “18 people have died in the flood so far. Among them, 4 died in Cumilla, 1 in Feni, 3 in Noakhali, 5 in Chattogram, 1 in Brahmanbaria, 1 in Lakshmipur, and 3 people died in Cox’s Bazar.”

The additional secretary also said that a “field hospital” has been built in Feni. There, the army and civil surgeons are providing medical care to the flood victims. “3,527 shelters have been opened, where 2,84,888 people have taken shelter and 21,695 cattle have been kept safe,” KM Ali Reza informed.

He said that a total of Tk 3.52 crore has been allotted to the flood-affected districts. At the same time, 20,150 tons of rice and 15,000 packets of dry food have been allocated. Besides, another Tk 35 lakh has been allocated for the purchase of baby food and cow food.
