Fuel supply may increase, pressure at pumps expected to ease

  • Update Time : Sunday, April 19, 2026

According to a BPC source, additional allocations of diesel, octane and petrol are being arranged

TDS Desk:

The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) is set to increase fuel supply from Sunday to address mounting pressure in the domestic fuel market, officials said.

According to a BPC source, additional allocations of diesel, octane and petrol are being arranged. Octane supply is expected to rise by 20%, while petrol and diesel allocations may increase by around 10%.

Meanwhile, revised fuel prices came into effect from midnight. Under the new rates, prices have increased by Tk19–20 per litre, a move that petrol pump owners and transport operators believe will help stabilise supply and demand.

An official from the Energy Division said demand has recently surged by about 30% compared to usual levels. Although supply has also exceeded last year’s average estimates, a shortage has still emerged in the market.

Authorities are now working with district administrations to determine revised pump-based allocations to better manage distribution, the official added.

Diesel accounts for around 63% of the country’s total fuel consumption. In addition to boosting diesel supply, authorities have increased allocations for octane and petrol.

Officials said the spike in demand is largely driven by global market situation and panic buying, prompting efforts to normalise the situation through increased supply.

Pump owners expect relief

Leaders of the Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners Association have expressed optimism that the market will stabilise following the latest price adjustment.

They said the increase in prices is likely to discourage excessive stockpiling and bring greater discipline to the supply chain.

In a statement, the association’s Member Secretary Mir Ahsan Uddin Parvez said: “This price adjustment will reduce the tendency of unnecessary stockpiling in the market and make the supply system more transparent. At the same time, increased supply will ease pressure at the pump level.”

Pump owners also said that restoring a balance between demand and supply would help prevent similar disruptions in the future.
