A Rajshahi court Sunday placed Jubo League leader Jahirul Islam Rubel on a 5-day remand over allegations of shooting at protesters during the anti-discrimination student movement on 5 August.
The Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1, presided by Judge Faisal Tarek, granted a 5-day remand for Rubel on Sunday at around 11:30am.
In the morning, Boalia Thana police placed Rubel before the court, seeking a 10-day remand for interrogation. After hearing the case, the court approved a 5-day remand.
Boalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Masud Parvez said Rubel was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from Cumilla late Saturday night. He was then handed over to Boalia police early Sunday morning.
Rubel faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms, with six cases already filed against him.
On 5 August, Rubel was spotted wearing a helmet and firing weapons at the student protesters in Rajshahi’s Alupotti area. Alongside him, three others were also seen wielding firearms. Several Awami League leaders were also reported to be present during the demonstration, brandishing weapons.
Rubel is a resident of Chandipur, Ward 7 of Rajshahi City. He previously ran for the position of councilor in the recent city elections but was defeated. He is currently the president of the Ward Jubo League.
