Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman Partha has remarked that ethics cannot be enforced simply through regulations, emphasizing that while policy can bring actions under a legal framework, moral responsibility must come from within.

Speaking at a view-exchange meeting with local journalists at the Bhola Press Club on Thursday morning, the minister stressed that half-truths in news reporting can cause irreparable harm and reiterated the crucial role of the press in a democratic system.

“The media is completely free today,” the Information Minister told journalists. “You will work independently. I believe the media is a pillar of democracy. You should evaluate whether our work is good or bad. At the same time, it is a moral responsibility to ensure that your writing does not damage anyone’s life, career, or dignity.”

Reflecting on media independence, Andaleeve Rahman Partha noted that he has never interfered with the press. “Even if 20 television channels and thousands of newspapers support you, you cannot stay in power unless it is intended,” he said, citing the recent fascist regime as a prime example. “We saw two years ago that even with total media backing, when time runs out, no one stays by your side. People naturally lose faith.”

The minister added that he has no interest in coercing coverage or penalizing journalists for critical reporting, stressing a commitment to ending such practices.

Addressing cyberbullying and misinformation, the minister highlighted the damage caused by online fake news, noting that rampant misinformation has undermined public trust in legitimate journalism. “Today, even when people see authentic news, they view it with suspicion,” he said.

He urged journalists to maintain constructive criticism and monitor government projects. “Highlight where our work is succeeding and check whether funds are being utilized honestly. Report on us to assist us in doing our jobs correctly, but ensure your reporting is free from personal bias or anger.”

The meeting was chaired by Bhola Press Club President Advocate Nazrul Haq Onu and moderated by General Secretary Nasir Uddin Liton.
