Actor Priyanka Chopra reflected on her journey and the challenges she faced when told that “films with subtitles or films that are non-English don’t travel” while she was “seeking work across borders.” Speaking at the Red Sea Film Festival, Priyanka expressed gratitude to her family, remembered her late father, Ashok Chopra, and appreciated her husband, singer Nick Jonas, for his unwavering support.
Priyanka was honored with an honorary award at the festival in Jeddah, presented by actor Sarah Jessica Parker. Recognizing Priyanka’s contributions to cinema, Sarah said, “It is my honour to present the Red Sea honorary award to the exceptional Priyanka Chopra Jonas.” Priyanka described the accolade as a “true honour.”
Nick Jonas escorted Priyanka to the stage as she accepted the award. In her speech, Priyanka thanked Sarah Jessica Parker, saying, “Thank you so much Sarah Jessica, you are such an icon to so many of us. To take the time to say those kind words about me and my work over the years, just meant a lot to me.”
Recalling the early days of her career, Priyanka shared her experience of being underestimated due to her background in Hindi and Telugu films. She said, “When I started working, I was 18 years old. I remember I was told that, I come from an industry that spoke Hindi and Telugu, non-English films. I remember when I was seeking work across borders, I was told that films with subtitles or films that are non-English don’t travel. Yet, here we are today.”
Priyanka Chopra will next be seen in the American action-drama “Heads of State”, co-starring Idris Elba and John Cena, and in the action-thriller “The Bluff”.
