Social worker Nurul Haque murder: 6 to walk gallows, 10 get life term

A court in Cumilla on Wednesday sentenced six people to death and 10 to life imprisonment in the murder case of social worker Nurul Haque of the Chhota Dhushia area in Brahmanpara of the district.

Judge Md Jahangir Hossain of Cumilla’s Additional District and Sessions Judge Fourth Court handed over this verdict on Wednesday (June 2) afternoon. All the convicts have been fined Tk 50,000, confirmed APP Mohammad Zakir Hossain, the lawyer for the plaintiff in the case.

Lawyer Mohammad Zakir Hossain said that there were a total of 22 accused in the Nurul Haque murder case. Later, the investigating officer of the case accused 20 people and submitted the charge-sheet to the court. 11 accused were present in the courtroom when the verdict was delivered. Another 7 accused were absconding. 2 accused died during the trial of the case and 2 were acquitted by the judge. A total of 9 witnesses have testified in this case.

“Enraged by the arbitration verdict on the land dispute, Md. Masum, the no. 1 accused in the case, along with the other accused killed the father with sharp weapons and beat him to death on the way home in the evening on 17 February 2011,” said Shoriful Islam, son of Nurul Haque, the plaintiff in the case.

In this incident, a case was filed against 22 people and other unknown persons. The investigating officer accused 20 people and submitted the charge-sheet to the court. The Judge delivered the verdict in this case today, he also said, mentioning, “We are satisfied with the verdict.”
