6 of a family killed in Sylhet road accident

Six people were killed in a head-on collision between a pickup and a leguna at Jaintapur in Sylhet.

The mishap occurred at the Darbast area on ​​Sylhet-Tamabil highway around 1 pm on Monday (March 18).

The deceased are – Mangali Patra, 50, wife of Santosh Patra of Paschim Thakur’s Matigram village in Chiknagul union of the upazila, Suchita Patra, 30, daughter-in-law of Santosh Patra, Bijli, Suchita’s 6-month-old daughter Bijli, Savitri Patra, 32, wife of Nanda Patra, Ritu Patra, 6, daughter of Subendra Patra, and Shyamala Patra, 55, wife of Nipendra Patra. All the deceased are said to be from the same family.

It is learned that a cattle-laden pickup was going along the Sylhet-Tamabil highway around 12 pm. At that time, when the pickup reached the Darbast area, it collided head-on with a leguna coming from the opposite direction. One person died on the spot, one at Jaintapur Health Complex and the rest at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Jaintapur Upazila Health Complex official Salauddin Mia, on the other hand, said that a child died while undergoing treatment at the health complex.

Jaintapur Model Police Station OC (Officer-in-Charge) Tajul Islam said that the Sylhet-Tamabil highway was blocked by local people after this incident. Later, the blockade was lifted after assuring of justice for the deceased by the police and local leaders. Now, traffic has become normal.
