Two UPDF men shot dead in Khagrachhari

Two activists of United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) were shot to death and another injured in a gunfight between two groups of the party at Mohalchari uapzila in Khagrachhari district on Wednesday.

The incident took place at around 7.30am in Durchhari village under the upazila.

The deceased Rabi Kumar Chakma, 65, and Shanta Chakma alias Bimol, 52, both were activists of the regional political party.

United People’s Democratic Front’s Prasit Khisa Group Khagrachhari district organizer Angya Marma confirmed their identities and said another activist Rohintu Chakma alias Tipon was missing after being injured in the incident.

He condemned the attack and also alleged that the shooting was carried out by the UPDF Democratic Front, a breakaway faction.

Meanwhile, the leaders of Democratic Front denied the allegation and said none of their members was involved in the killing.

Mohalchari Police Station officer-in-charge Md Nasir Uddin said being informed, additional police have been sent to the spot, however, they could not reach the spot as the area is inaccessible.

The actual reason behind the killing would be known after investigation, he added.

Additional Superintendent of Police in Khagrachhari district Jasim Uddin confirmed the matter, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.
