2 students were beaten to death in the capital’s Sayedabad area. The deceased are – Saif Arafat Sharif, 20, and Saidul Islam Yasin, 19. They had been working as volunteers for quite some time. However, the identity of those who caused this incident was not found.
When they were brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in serious condition at around 10:30 am on Wednesday (August 14), the doctor declared them dead.
“The three students who were severely beaten were left at Jatrabari police station at around 8:30 am. They were struggling in pain at the police station,” said Samrat Sheikh, a scout member who brought Saif Arafat Sharif to the hospital.
He also said that it is learned that they were “physically tortured in a hotel at Sayedabad area”. Gradually their condition deteriorated and they were brought to the hospital. However, the doctor declared them dead after examination.
Shilpi Akhter, the mother of the deceased Saidul Islam Yasin, said “Yasin was working as a volunteer for 15 days in different places”. On Tuesday morning, he left the house at Dhalpur Boubazar in Jatrabari. After that, he spoke on the phone many times. Yasin talked to his mother on the phone around 4 am Wednesday. He told his mother that he was still healthy.
“In the morning, someone called me and told me that my son’s condition was not good and asked me to come to Jatrabari police station quickly. I immediately went to the police station and found Yasin in serious condition,” Yasin’s mother also said.
Shilpi Akhter complained that her son was “still able to speak” while being taken to the hospital by car from the police station. “My son told me that they were beaten on false charges. They did not commit any crime. After that, Yasin gradually fainted,” she added.
Saidul Islam Yasin, son of Sakhawat Hossain of the Dhalpur Boubazar area, used to study in a madrasa in the Kutubkhali area.
Meanwhile, the deceased Saif Arafat Sharif’s name was identified from the NID card in his wallet. His father’s name is Kabir Hossain and mother’s name is Maryam. Saif’s house is in Kadmir Char village of Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj. Currently, he lives at the Tony Tower area in Jatrabari
Citing the doctor, DMCH police camp in-charge Md. Bachchu Mia said that the bodies have been kept in morgues. Details are being sought.
