Seven more people died of dengue in the 24 hours till Wednesday, taking the death toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 171 this year.

A total of 1,753 dengue patients were hospitalised during the period-the highest number of daily admissions recorded so far this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The figures were published in the daily dengue update issued by the DGHS Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room on Wednesday.

Of the seven deaths reported in the past 24 hours, three occurred in areas outside Khulna division, while one each was reported in Chattogram, Mymensingh, Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions.

Of the newly hospitalised patients, 394 were admitted in Dhaka division outside the city corporations, 349 in Khulna, 186 in Barishal and 183 in Mymensingh.

Another 177 patients were admitted in Chattogram, 153 in Rajshahi, 53 in Rangpur and nine in Sylhet. In Dhaka, 175 patients were admitted to hospitals in areas under Dhaka North City Corporation and 174 under Dhaka South City Corporation.

Of the 1,753 patients admitted in the past 24 hours, 1,119 were men and 634 women, accounting for 63.8 percent and 36.2 percent of the new admissions respectively.

A total of 56,916 dengue patients have been hospitalised across the country since 1 January. Of them, 52,579 have been discharged, while 4,166 are currently undergoing treatment.

Another 1,638 patients were discharged in the past 24 hours.

People aged 21-25 accounted for the largest number of new admissions, with 239 cases. They were followed by those aged 16-20, with 226 cases, and 26-30, with 221.

Of the seven people who died in the past 24 hours, four were men and three women. Two were aged 26-30, while one each was aged 31-40, 41-45, 51-55, 66-70 and 0-5.

According to DGHS data, 81 of the 171 dengue deaths recorded this year were men and 89 women. The age information of one victim was recorded separately.

Of the total dengue patients hospitalised this year, 35,430 were men and 21,245 women.

The 21-25 age group has recorded the highest number of hospitalisations so far this year, with 8,270 cases.
