A cartoon exhibition titled “Rebellion in Cartoons” will begin at Drik Gallery in the capital Panthapath area on Friday. The aim of the exhibition is to showcase a collection of artworks that emerged from recent anti-discrimination student movement in the country.

A diverse array of cartoons and graffiti, that played an important role in the anti-discrimination protests, will be showcased at the event. Bangladesh Cartoonist Association in association with Drik and Earki is going to organise the show.

Cartoonist Mehedi Haque announced the exhibition in a post on his Facebook on Tuesday.

He wrote: “Political events are common in our national life. But the event based on cartoon is rarely happening in our society. Earlier, those who have made cartoons, have done it with fear in mind. But the recent anti-discrimination student movement witnessed an unprecedented scene. The more fear is imposed, the worse the crowd becomes. And if you overcome fear, if you become unhesitating in expressing your opinion, how cartoons can shine, this time we have seen. The first artwork came from cartoonists. The newcomers also joined it with their hearts. Some published on personal social media, some painted on the pages of news media. Some have drawn names, some have drawn anonymously, it has spread on the internet in the shares of numerous people.”

“Not only through digital media, but graffiti has been spread on the walls of the city by raising the buzz of youth. Some of it has surfaced on social media, and remains in the memory of passers-by. Our exhibition brings together these priceless creations. It is certainly not possible in this scope to bring up all of them. But as much as there is, it will take us back to this shining time of student movement”, he added.

The exhibition will continue daily from 3:00pm to 8:00pm till 23 August.
