Former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was shown arrested on Sunday by the International Crimes Tribunal in the case over alleged crimes against humanity during the July uprising.

Initially, ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina was made lone accused in the case filed on October 17 last year.

Around 10:00am on Sunday Mamun was brought to the court premises in connection with the case. He was produced before the tribunal at 1:00pm.

After the prosecution filed a petition on Sunday for showing Mamun arrested in the case, the tribunal, five months after the case was first filed, granted the request and allowed its investigation agency to interrogate him on March 18.

A two-member ICT bench, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the orders.

With on Sunday order, Mamun has become the second accused in the case.

According to the ICT investigation agency, Mamun, as a superior officer, bears command responsibility for ordering police to fire on students and civilians during the uprising.

The prosecution sought his arrest based on these findings.

In a separate case related to crimes against humanity during the July uprising, Mamun, retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan, and eight other former police officers remain in custody.
