BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Thursday said local leadership will not be developed if elections are held under the Proportional Representation (PR) system, and more dictators will emerge.
“If elections are held under the PR system, the preferred candidate in the parliamentary constituency will not be able to become an MP. People will not be able to vote for their preferred candidate,” he said while inaugurating a voluntary blood donation and blood grouping programme in the district town.
Pro-BNP Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) Rangpur unit organized the event as part of BNP’s central programme to mark the anniversary of the July-August Mass Uprising.
Rizvi said under the PR system, the party will elect MPs, and if the party elects MPs, more dictators will be created.
Recalling martyr Abu Sayeed, whom he called the pride of Rangpur, the BNP leader said Abu Sayeed stood unarmed before bullets for the cause of democracy, and even children sacrificed their lives.
“Will we forget Abu Sayeed, Mugdha, Wasim, Fayiaz? Will we forget those whose blood gave us a new Bangladesh?” he asked.
Rangpur Metropolitan Unit BNP Member Secretary Mahfuz Un Nabi Don, Swechhasebak Dal Central Vice President Dr Jahidul Kabir, Chhatra Dal Central Vice President Dr Touhidur Rahman Awal, Metropolitan Unit Jubo Dal Convener Nurunnabi Chowdhury Milon, Rangpur District Unit Jubo Dal President Nazmul Alam Naju, Rangpur Medical College Branch DAB President Prof Dr Mahmudul Haque Sarkar and General Secretary Prof Dr Shariful Islam Mondal also spoke.
