Popular theatre troupe “Mad Theatre” will stage their new production “RabindranatherDwitiyaBijaya” at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh ShilpakalaAcademy (BSA) tomorrow evening.
The play is based on Rabindranath Tagore and Argentinian author Victoria Ocampo’s relationship during the ailing poet’s stay in Buenos Aires in the 1920s.
Asadul Islam has written and directed the play. There are two characters in ‘RabindranatherDwitiyaBijaya’. Asadul Islam has played the character of Rabindranath Tagore and Sonia Hasan has played the character of Victoria Ocampo in the play.
Tagore was 63 when he met Ocampo and the 34-year-old writer took good care of the ailing bard during his 58-day stay in Argentina.
One day during his days of illness at the Plaza Hotel, one of his readers, Victoria Ocampo, suddenly comes to him. At the reader’s invitation, he leaves the hotel and starts staying at a rented house outside the city in San Isidro, on the banks of the river Rio de la Plata. Sitting on the chair placed on the balcony of the house, he stares at the river, thinks, and writes poems.
Under Ocampo’s care, Tagore begins to recover and the play moves forward.
‘RabindranatherDwitiyaBijaya’ is the second production of ‘Mad Theatre’ . The play was premiered on 13 May 2023. The play was also staged in Guwahati, India on 3 June in the same year.
Mad Theatre started their journey in October 2015. Their first production was “NoddiyoNotim”. Written and directed by the founder of Mad Theatre Asadul Islam, the play mainly revolves around three characters which are played by Asadul Islam, Sonia Hasan and ArjoMeghdut. Interestingly, all three actors in the play are from the same family.
