Anti-quota movement: Cops among 12 injured in Sirajganj clash

At least 12 persons including six police personnel were injured in a clash between quota reformists and police in Sirajganj town on Tuesday.

The injured were admitted to Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib General Hospital and different clinics in the town. Of them, the critical injured Soumik Islam Hridoy, Sub-Inspector (SI) of DB police was sent to Dhaka for better treatment as his condition deteriorated further.

Police and local sources said that, a section of students brought out a procession from Islamia College ground at around 3:00pm demanding reformation of quota. When the procession reached near Railgate area in the town, police tried to intercept them. But the protesters made attack on them that leads to a clash.

The agitating students threw brickbats targeting police, while police hurled several rounds of tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the mobs leaving 12 persons from both sides injured.

Arifur Rahman Mandal, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Sirajganj told The Daily Sky that, “Six cops including Sirajul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station have been injured in the attack of students, while they went to control the situation. Of the injured police personnel, the condition of Soumik Islam Hridoy, Sub-Inspector of DB Police was critical. He was sent to Dhaka for better treatment.”

At present, the situation has remained under control. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the town to avert further untoward incident, he added.
