A landmine explosion near the Myanmar border along the Naikhongchhari border of Bandarban has left a Bangladeshi youth severely injured, with his left leg severed.

The victim, 17-year-old Md Tarikul, hails from Maishkum in Kauarkup Union, Ramu Upazila, Cox’s Bazar.

According to local sources, the explosion occurred around 12:30pm on Monday when Tarikul attempted to cross the No Man’s Land near border pillar 48 to smuggle cattle from Myanmar.

The blast severed his left leg and caused multiple injuries across his body. He has been taken to a hospital in Cox’s Bazar for advanced treatment.

Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Muhammad Mazharul Islam Chowdhury Shamsul Alam confirmed the matter.

A former member of Ward 9’s Union Parishad, said that locals heard a loud explosion in the Phultoli border area under the jurisdiction of Border Guard Bangladesh’s (BGB) 11th Battalion.

Upon arrival, they found Tarikul critically injured and rushed him to Naikhongchhari Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of his condition, doctors referred him to a hospital in Cox’s Bazar for further treatment, he added.

Sources said that for months, smugglers have been illegally transporting cattle from Myanmar through unguarded points along the Naikhongchhari border, including Chakdhala, Ashartali, Phultoli, Amtali, Kombonia, and Jamchhari, often evading law enforcement.

Many individuals have fallen victim to landmine explosions in these areas while engaging in smuggling activities.

On January 24, three separate landmine explosions near the Phultoli and Dochhori borders in Naikhongchhari severely injured three Bangladeshi nationals, all of whom had their legs severed.
